Intersections are where the rules of the road meet driver decisions, and Houston intersections see more wreck volume per mile of road than any other category of location in the city. Stop signs get rolled through. Red lights get run when drivers think they can beat the yellow. Yield signs get ignored on highway merges. Left-turning drivers fail to wait for gaps in oncoming traffic. Pedestrians in crosswalks get cut off by drivers turning right on red. Each of these scenarios produces a recognizable wreck pattern with specific evidence priorities and specific Texas Transportation Code provisions that apply.

Adley Law Firm has been representing injured Houstonians since 1994. Our intersection practice covers every category of right-of-way wreck across the Houston metro: signal-controlled intersections, stop sign and yield sign intersections, uncontrolled intersections, and pedestrian crosswalks. The Different Categories Of Intersection Accidents And The Texas Laws Governing Each

Intersection wrecks split into five primary categories under Texas law. Red-light-running cases fall under Texas Transportation Code Section 544.007, which requires drivers to obey traffic-control signals. Stop-sign and yield-sign cases fall under Section 545.153 (stop signs) and Section 545.154 (yield signs), which require drivers to stop or yield as the sign indicates. Left-turn cases against oncoming traffic fall under Section 545.152, which requires left-turning drivers to yield to oncoming vehicles already in the intersection or close enough to constitute a hazard. Right-turn-on-red and pedestrian-crosswalk cases fall under Sections 544.007(c)(2) and 552.001 through 552.006. Uncontrolled intersection cases fall under Section 545.151.

Each statutory provision produces a different evidentiary path. Signal-controlled intersections benefit from traffic camera footage and signal-cycle records. Stop sign and yield sign cases turn on witness accounts, vehicle damage patterns, and pre-impact behavior reconstruction. Left-turn cases require accident reconstruction showing the oncoming vehicle’s speed and position. Pedestrian cases need crosswalk-status documentation and pedestrian-signal phase records. Uncontrolled intersection cases hinge on which vehicle arrived first or had the right-most position, which is sometimes the hardest fact pattern to prove.

For example, a potential Houston intersection case might involve a wreck at an intersection where the responding officer initially listed the claimant as at fault based on the other driver’s statement. Investigation pulls the city’s traffic camera footage from the intersection showing the claimant entering on green and the at-fault driver running the red. The amended crash report reverses the fault finding. The case proceeds with clear negligence per se against the red-light-running driver, and the case value reflects the corrected liability picture rather than the initial misallocation.

Houston Intersection Accident Cases Our Firm Handles

Intersection cases cover the full spectrum of right-of-way wrecks across the Houston metro. The case types below appear most often in our intersection caseload.

Red-Light Running Wrecks At Signalized Intersections:
Red-light running produces wrecks at every signalized intersection in Houston when drivers misjudge the yellow phase or deliberately run the red. Texas Transportation Code Section 544.007 makes the violation negligence per se. Camera footage typically resolves these cases.
Stop Sign Rolling Or Failure-To-Yield Wrecks:
Drivers who roll through stop signs or fail to yield to cross traffic produce a specific intersection wreck pattern. The Texas Transportation Code Section 545.153 requirements for complete stops and cross-traffic yielding form the legal framework.
Yield Sign Failure-To-Merge Wrecks On Highway Ramps:
Highway on-ramps and feeder-road merges with yield signs produce wrecks when drivers fail to yield to through traffic. Section 545.154 governs yield sign behavior. The merging driver typically bears fault unless the through driver was speeding or otherwise contributing.
Left-Turn Wrecks Against Oncoming Traffic:
Drivers turning left across oncoming lanes who fail to yield produce wrecks where the left-turner gets struck by the oncoming vehicle. Section 545.152 puts the duty on the left-turning driver. These cases rarely involve significant comparative-negligence questions.
Right-Turn-On-Red Wrecks Involving Pedestrians In The Crosswalk:
Drivers making right turns on red who fail to yield to pedestrians in the crosswalk produce a specific wreck pattern. Section 544.007(c)(2) permits right turns on red only after a complete stop and only when yielding to pedestrians and other traffic. Pedestrian crosswalk cases involve serious injuries.
Pedestrian Crosswalk Wrecks Where The Pedestrian Had The Signal:
Pedestrians entering a crosswalk on the walk signal who get struck by a turning vehicle have strong cases under Sections 552.001 through 552.003. Camera footage from intersection cameras typically supports these cases.
Uncontrolled Intersection Wrecks In Residential Areas:
Some Houston residential intersections lack any traffic control. Section 545.151 governs right-of-way at uncontrolled intersections, generally giving the right of way to the driver on the right when two vehicles arrive at approximately the same time.

Houston Intersections Where Wrecks Concentrate Across All Categories

Intersection wreck frequency varies by intersection. The locations below produce above-average caseload across multiple intersection wreck categories.

Westheimer Through The Galleria Corridor

Westheimer through the Galleria district produces intersection wrecks at higher than average rates across red-light, stop sign, and left-turn categories due to heavy traffic and complex signal phasing. Wrecks at Westheimer-Sage, Westheimer-Post Oak, and Westheimer-Yorktown appear consistently in caseload.

Kirby Drive From Greenway To West University

Kirby Drive between Greenway Plaza and West University Place generates intersection wrecks at the major cross streets (Richmond, Westheimer, San Felipe, Bissonnet, University). Left-turn and red-light cases dominate the corridor’s caseload.

Main Street And METRORail Corridor Through The Museum District

The Main Street corridor along the METRORail tracks produces intersection wrecks tied to rail-crossing signal phasing and complex pedestrian patterns. Wrecks at Main-Wheeler, Main-Hermann, and Main-Bissonnet appear regularly.

Northwest Houston FM 1960 Commercial Strip

FM 1960 between U.S. 290 and the Greater North Houston area generates suburban-style intersection wrecks at higher speeds. Wrecks at FM 1960-Veterans Memorial, FM 1960-Champions Forest, and FM 1960-Cypress Creek Parkway show up consistently.

Bay Area Boulevard Through Clear Lake

Bay Area Boulevard’s intersections through the Clear Lake corridor produce wrecks tied to NASA Road 1 commuter traffic. Left-turn signal phasing affects wreck frequency at Bay Area-El Camino Real and Bay Area-Space Center.

Bellaire Boulevard Through Sharpstown And Asiatown

Bellaire Boulevard’s intersections through Sharpstown and the Asiatown corridor produce intersection wrecks tied to dense commercial activity and complex pedestrian patterns. Bellaire-Beechnut, Bellaire-Wilcrest, and Bellaire-Hillcroft appear regularly.

What Makes Houston Intersection Cases Specific Across All Categories

Intersection cases involve evidence preservation, right-of-way analysis, and reconstruction dynamics that apply across the full range of intersection wreck types. The factors below come up across the spectrum of intersection cases.

Traffic Camera Coverage Varies By Intersection And By Jurisdiction:
City of Houston, Harris County, Harris County Toll Road Authority, and TxDOT all operate different traffic camera systems at different intersections. Preservation requests have to target the right operator for the specific intersection. Knowing which system covers a given intersection accelerates evidence collection.
Signal-Cycle Records Support Reconstruction When Cameras Aren’t Available:
Houston’s traffic signal control infrastructure logs signal-cycle data on most signalized intersections. When camera footage isn’t available, the cycle records can document signal state at impact based on the time-stamped wreck record.
Witness Pool At Intersections Includes Cross-Traffic Drivers Watching The Signal:
Drivers stopped at the same intersection during the wreck make excellent witnesses because they were watching the signal. Identifying and interviewing these witnesses early in the case (before they leave the area or forget details) substantially strengthens reconstruction.
Vehicle Damage Patterns Document Impact Direction:
Crush patterns and paint transfer on the vehicles document which vehicle was moving in which direction at impact. Accident reconstruction interprets the damage to support timeline and approach-angle conclusions. Photographs of vehicle damage at the scene matter for reconstruction.
Pedestrian Cases Carry Different Documentation Requirements:
Pedestrian-crosswalk cases need pedestrian-signal-phase records, crosswalk-status photographs, witness accounts about the pedestrian’s path through the crosswalk, and (when available) traffic camera footage showing the moment of impact. The documentation framework differs from vehicle-vehicle wrecks.
Initial Police Reports Sometimes Misidentify Right-Of-Way Violations:
Responding officers at intersection wrecks reach quick conclusions based on driver statements that may not reflect the actual right-of-way picture. Camera footage and witness investigation often produces a different fault conclusion than the initial report. Supplemental investigation can amend reports.

What To Do After A Houston Intersection Accident

The sequence below captures the evidence that intersection cases depend on across the full range of intersection wreck types.

1

Get Medical Attention For Any Injury, Even Apparently Minor Ones

Intersection wrecks at urban speeds produce injuries that develop over days (whiplash, concussion, soft-tissue damage). Get evaluated within 24 to 48 hours regardless of how you feel at the scene. The visit creates the medical baseline that the case depends on.

2

Photograph The Intersection From Multiple Angles

Photograph the traffic-control devices (signals, signs), the lane markings, the pedestrian crossings, and the position of each vehicle after the wreck. Include wide-angle shots showing the overall intersection geometry. The photographs preserve the configuration as it existed.

3

Identify Witnesses Among The Drivers Stopped Around The Intersection

Other drivers stopped at the intersection during the wreck are valuable witnesses. Get names, phone numbers, and quick statements about what they saw. The witness pool at intersection wrecks usually exists; you just have to capture it before people leave.

4

Request The Police Report And Verify It Reflects The Right-Of-Way Picture

HPD or Harris County Sheriff crash reports often include the responding officer’s fault conclusion. Verify the report reflects the actual events. Reports with errors can be amended through supplemental investigation, which becomes important when the initial conclusion was wrong.

5

Preserve Traffic Camera Footage Through Formal Preservation Letters

City of Houston, Harris County, and TxDOT camera retention windows range from days to weeks depending on the operator. Preservation letters sent within the first 30 days protect footage. Counsel engaged quickly accelerates this step.

6

Engage Adley Law Firm Before The Carrier Frames The Right-Of-Way Question

Carriers often try to establish their preferred fault narrative within the first weeks through driver and witness statements. Engagement before the carrier dominates the framing lets us collect the same evidence with proper framing. The consultation is free.

Houston Intersection Accident FAQs

How do I prove who had the green light if there’s no traffic camera footage?

When camera footage isn’t available, cases proceed using witness accounts, signal-cycle records from the city’s traffic management system, vehicle damage patterns documenting impact direction, and accident reconstruction. Most signalized intersections in Houston have one or more of these alternative evidence sources available.

What if the police report blames me for the intersection wreck?

The police report isn’t binding on the civil case. Camera footage, witness accounts, and reconstruction can support a different fault conclusion. Reports with errors can be amended through formal supplemental investigation requests to the responding agency. Cases regularly proceed with fault findings different from the initial report.

How do right-of-way rules work at uncontrolled intersections in Texas?

Texas Transportation Code Section 545.151 governs uncontrolled intersections. When two vehicles arrive at approximately the same time, the driver on the left must yield to the driver on the right. When one vehicle clearly arrives first, that driver has the right of way regardless of which side they came from.

Can I recover if the pedestrian-walk signal had ended when I started crossing?

It depends on when you entered the crosswalk. Texas Transportation Code Section 552.002 allows pedestrians who entered the crosswalk during the walk signal to complete their crossing. The signal turning to don’t-walk during a crossing doesn’t automatically defeat the pedestrian’s right of way.

What’s the difference between a stop sign and a yield sign legally?

Stop signs require a complete stop before proceeding (Texas Transportation Code Section 545.153). Yield signs require slowing and yielding to cross traffic but don’t require a complete stop unless necessary to avoid a collision (Section 545.154). Both require yielding to other traffic with right of way.

How long do I have to file an intersection accident case in Houston?

Texas Civ. Prac. & Rem. Code Section 16.003 sets the statute of limitations at two years from the wreck date. The two-year clock applies regardless of which intersection rule the case turns on. Engagement early protects the deadline while evidence development runs in parallel.

How does Adley Law Firm charge for intersection accident cases?

Contingency. The fee comes from the recovery only if we win. There are no upfront fees, no hourly billing, and no out-of-pocket costs during representation. Intersection cases follow the same fee structure as our other auto wreck cases regardless of which intersection rule applies.
