Families Seek Answers After 18-Wheeler Kills Four Women on U.S. 87

The case raises serious questions about truck safety, contractor oversight, and corporate responsibility in Texas

On November 5, 2025, a routine drive in the Texas Panhandle turned into a nightmare when an H-E-B-contracted 18-wheeler plowed into a Nissan Altima carrying four young women on U.S. Highway 87. The car had its hazard lights on and was moving slowly due to a flat tire when the speeding semi-truck slammed into it from behind. The impact was devastating. The smaller car was crushed and spun off into the median, and the 18-wheeler toppled onto its side. All four women inside the Altima were killed, a heartbreaking loss that their families say could have been prevented.

Families Demand Accountability from H-E-B and Its Contractors

The victims’ families have filed a wrongful death lawsuit seeking justice for their loved ones. The suit, filed in Bexar County in late 2025, names H-E-B, 39-year-old truck driver Guadalupe Daniel Villarreal, and two San Antonio-based trucking companies; Parkway Transport (an H-E-B subsidiary) and Scrappy Trucking LLC. According to the complaint, Villarreal was hauling a load of potatoes for H-E-B and driving much too fast, failing to control his rig before he “slammed his 18-wheeler into the rear” of the car. The families accuse the driver and his employers of gross negligence, noting that the young women in the car did nothing to cause the wreck.

The four women who lost their lives were from the Houston area and ranged in age from 18 to 31. They were simply trying to get home safely despite a tire mishap, yet ended up in a fatal crash because a professional trucker allegedly failed to pay attention. Now their parents and relatives are demanding answers. The lawsuit seeks more than $1 million in damages for their immense loss, including compensation for the families’ mental anguish, funeral expenses, lost companionship, and other profound harms.

Allegations of Distracted Driving and Missing Evidence

A key allegation is that the truck driver may have been distracted, possibly by his cell phone, in the moments before the crash. Attorneys for the families say video from a passing vehicle shows the 18-wheeler never applied its brakes before impact. If accurate, this suggests the driver was not aware of the vehicle ahead. The lawsuit argues that this level of inattention rises to the level of extreme negligence.

The suit also raises concerns about how evidence was handled after the crash. Despite formal letters sent on November 17, 2025 urging the trucking companies to preserve the wrecked truck and onboard data for inspection, those requests were allegedly ignored. When follow-up attempts went unanswered, the families’ legal team asked a court to intervene. They requested a temporary restraining order and injunction to ensure crucial evidence, including dashcam footage and the driver’s cellphone records, would not be lost or destroyed.

H-E-B’s Response and Questions of Responsibility

H-E-B responded to the lawsuit with condolences for the victims’ families, but also pointed out that the 18-wheeler’s driver was “a third-party vendor driver, not an H-E-B Partner (employee)”. In other words, he wasn’t directly on H-E-B’s payroll. The company says it is cooperating with the investigation along with its contractor. Still, the truck accident lawsuit contends that H-E-B bears responsibility since it hired the haulers and the driver was transporting goods for H-E-B’s benefit at the time. Big companies have a duty to ensure the carriers they enlist are safe. If a contracted trucker causes a fatal crash due to negligence, the company that hired them can be held accountable through direct negligence or vicarious liability.

This case also highlights broader questions of corporate responsibility. Did H-E-B and its affiliates properly vet and train the driver? Were unrealistic delivery schedules or pressures a factor in this crash? Such issues will likely be explored as the case unfolds. If the evidence is as damning as the attorneys suggest (they describe the crash video as “shocking”), the defendants might choose to settle rather than face a public trial. Either way, the families have sent a clear message that they intend to hold every responsible party accountable.

Your Rights After a Serious Truck Accident

For any Texas family affected by a catastrophic truck accident, it is important to understand your rights. No amount of money can undo the heartbreak of losing a loved one, but pursuing a legal claim can provide a path to justice and help ease the financial burden of medical bills, funeral costs, lost income, and other losses. These lawsuits also bring unsafe practices to light and can pressure companies to improve safety.

Truck accident cases are often complex. They frequently involve multiple parties, federal safety regulations, and large insurance carriers. Critical evidence can disappear if it is not preserved quickly, which is why speaking with an experienced truck accident attorney early matters. A skilled lawyer can secure evidence, handle the legal process, and pursue fair compensation while you focus on healing.
